Normal night time temps for me have been in the low 40's as typical with deviations lower occasionally. I have hiked the JMT in every summer month and September is closet to July in temps but less storms. You can hike with food outside your canister, but at night it needs to be in a canister, in a bear box, or hung.

The nobo permit for jmt is extremely easy to get — there is no reason to abuse the 500 mile pct permit just to hike the jmt.
